Some people even without doing any promotion were able to rank high in se especially those using long tail keywords.

Yes, SE gives priotity to domain names with keywords.

Yes, it is very beneficial to use use domain name with your targeted keywords. some sites get good index rank without doing much more SEO work, because in their domain name they hv their keywords.

Having keywords in the url allow a website to get good ranking in either msn or yahoo search engine but not for google, do bear this in mind.
