SMO stands for Social Media Optimization. According to my view, SMO is mostly focuing on media promotion while SEO is for ranking sites in Search Engines.

SEO VS SMO.. BOTH concept are entirely different, SEO related with page rank and SERP whereas SMO related with Traffic. Traffic can be generated through PPC but PAGE rank and SERP cannot be genereted without onpage optimization and of page optimization. SMO is only ADDED feature of SEO and not more that.

I have read this internet that Social media optimization (SMO) is a set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites and it is related to SEO.
