There are no different tool for long tail and generic keyword research. I have regularly used google keyword research tool adword and its free. There are many other paid tool for keyword research.

Good keyword can find from google adwords for free.
but it is depend on you which types keywords want you target, well many keyword will be providing such more traffic and global searches,.

I think tool is always same but its only depend upon you what kind of keywords do you want to research either long tail or generic keywords.
Google adword keywords tool is best keyword research tool but you should have good knowledge as how to use it and find relevant keywords.

Long Tail keyword is very usually once you have it right.. Since it was a long keyword, you have to make sure you will use the useful one.

* Word-tracker is one of best tool to choose long tail keywords but you can't use multiple try in free account.

Keyword research tools are many but problem is most of these are paid. I suggest you make use of Google’s Keyword planner which is a high end keyword research tool made available for free. It is best tool for all kinds of keywords related analytic and selection.

I think google keyword planner is good enough, but if you want more Long Tail Keywork is the best choice for you. Or google suggestion still not bad.
