Hey friend thanks for the info, these are really the two best ways to earn money but you can't get success in both of them without having enough traffic. So for me promoting a website effectively is the first and the most important step to get success as you neither earns from ads nor from selling goods and services without having a quality traffic.

Remember that line from field of dreams " if you build it they will come" ? Well that may be true in Hollywood or with traditional brick and mortar businesses but online your store is invisible. And no matter how many times you look at your analytics for your pretty new site nothing happens overnight.
what you need is traffic now. there are many great suggestions in this forum on how to get traffic, dir submits, articles, blog posts, backlinking etc. this will be something that should be performed regularly to get your site ranked organically, but it takes time. if you want immediate traffic all you can do is buy it until the SEO takes hold.
PPC can be very expensive if not managed and tested correctly.
What's worked well for my online business are media buys. There are a couple affordable sites that i use regularly.
