For a novice of SEo, you can get more backlink by several ways:

1. exchange links with some site whose Pr is beyond yours. That is benefit for your site.

2. go to some big forum to make some relate links

3. wright high quality articles and press them to some high pr website.

You could also check where your competitors are linking and you could copy them. They have mentioned almost everything you need to know just make sure that you will do a combination of all of them in a "constant velocity" and you will be fine.
