Take your keyword phrase and type it into Google, Yahoo and MSN. Just count the number of Sponsored Links at the top of the page and at the sides. If your keyword phrase is profitable you will see a lot of sponsored links, which means sites/businesses are advertising. Where there is advertising, there is profit!
Well I would like to recommend you to use Google Keyword suggestion tool, Google insights for search and Google Trends to check the volume of search against a specific website or keyword. All these are free. There are many softwares offering service of keyword checking and suggestions but they charge fee for it.

I always look for keywords that are getting at least 25,000 searches a month with less than 35,000 competing pages and I create 50 back links a week and can usually rank for the keyword in less then 30 days.
