There is a short answer for your question. There is a free tool in Submitexpress.com site calls “Keyword Suggestion Tool”. Visit there and see how popular the keywords you are going to use. It will be really helpful you to find out about your keywords.

another one, make your keyword relevant to the site and dont use a long term or prhase because it could be treated as a spam to a search engines.

Usually I follow up with google statistic and I check most wanted words concerning my website . .

To select the right keywords-

1. Try to select those keywords which your competitors have not thought about.
2.Choose those keywords which seem more profitable and looks to generate more sales. Optimise on these keywords.
3.Make sure that keywords are relevant with your website so that people who enter the site do not leave it immediately.
4.try to assemble those list of keywords that covers your site very well so that any thing is not left out.

You could still use the keywords of your competitors site as long as it is part of your own site. Then try to look for other keywords/terms that are related with your site's theme. Create a unique and attractive content (to make it stand-out against the competitors)

Select your targeted keywords by using keyword research and suggestion tools. Also check the keyword searches per month and keyword traffic per search engine.

Well, to choose better keywords, you can use Google Adwords. It provides better keyword suggestions.
