It really depends on the niche. You have to experiment to find out. Some products only have so many customers you can ever reach, others you can convince almost any one to buy. If your ticket price is high you may be forced to bid on expensive words, but never forget the long tail of cheap words that the competition is over looking. If you offer something slightly different from the competition you don't need to be number one, just in the top three.
