First of all. Check link details those are submitted before or live in dmoz. Follow these with details.

It may take some time (sometimes 6 months or more ...) before your website will show up in the Open Directory Project. However, do not resubmit your website during the waiting period as this can only result in a longer delay or get your website rejected. Be patient and regularly check the status of your submission by doing the search on DMOZ. If your website does not get listed for a long period of time or gets rejected, you can also check on the status of the submission or the reasons for the rejection by contacting the editors for the subcategory that you selected.

First submit your site to DMOZ then totally forget about that.

It's really hard, the better thing to do is study those sites already listed on your niche and how they used proper words. Come up with the better one and submit it...

does DMOZ still accept submissions?

Most sites that are rejected are because the submission guidelines are not followed. take the time to read them thoroughly then have another try in the most appropriate category, without using excessive keywords or sales talk.

Maybe your website havent meet their criteria. But its okay, coz you can still build some links with some directories, forum posting etc.
