well myfriend,when you search anything it is basically Governed by the algorithms .These algorithms are mainly responsible for resolving the user queries like Humming bird algorithm,Panda algorithm and Penguine algorithm.

My friend that's a billion dollar question and no one can answer you how exactly that happens. However a common functionality of search engines is to crawl the content on your page through bots called spiders and take into accounts various factors like traffic and quality of content to rank the website.

there are too many search engines today..everyday theres new search engines. Anyway...Google, yahoo and Msn are the most popular search engines.

You need Google analytics for tracking your traffic. Google webmaster tools for tracking your keywords. And Yahoo site Explorer to track links back to your site as Google does like to provide this info in a reliable manner.
