Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) also known as Search Engine Marketing (SEM) has become very popular among Manchester Web Designers and online marketers in the UK.
There are millions of websites online today which gives general information, product knowledge, medical advice, services and solutions, techniques and much more useful information on different topics. How do we find the information that we require out of these millions of websites in a jiffy? The first thing you may be thinking right now is Googling it, or searching on Yahoo, Bing or Ask.com. You may use one of these search engines to fetch the most relevant results to your query. These are the leading search engines in the World Wide Web today, used by millions of people from around the globe daily.
If you take a look at Google, how does it identify and categorise these websites according to its relevancy to the query typed in by a user from somewhere on earth? Each search engine uses different methods of delivering search results. Google uses over 200 of methods in finding the best results.
How is Google able to find and compare so many websites? Surprising, but a kind of robot is sent to fetch, index and update websites daily. These robots follow from link to link on every website. When a new link is available the robot indexes it and sends a copy to the server. Then it analyses the website using various criteria’s to rank these pages and updates the index. So when someone searches using a particular keyword it checks the index and lists the best matching sites on top. E.g. If you search Manchester Web Design on Google the Googlebot finds all the sites related to Web designs in Manchester and lists the top related sites on ascending order. These bots ignore stop words such as in, at, of during a search.
Optimising a website for search engines is very competitive in terms of ranking for keywords. A very good PR (PageRank) will depend on many factors such as keyword relevancy, page content, onsite and offsite optimisation. However, there are unethical ways for a website to appear on Search Engine Results Page (SERP) this is also known as “Black hat SEO”, but they do not last long as search engines are very quick in finding them and penalising. If you are penalised for a number of reason on Google, they give a second change and will reconsider your site as long as you correct your site’s behaviour. In this matter “Prevention is always better than cure”. Keeping up the good reputation earned over the years or months are very important with search engines.
Google may penalise your site for various reasons, sometimes you may not be even aware that your site has been banned. This could happen especially if you are a novice in the SEO business, by negligence or trying something new with your website. It is always a very good idea to leave it for the experts in Search Engine Optimising. It will save you a lot of time and money.
Black hat SEO companies will promise you things like “Your site on Google first page” “Top rankings on search engines” and so on but always remember not to get into those traps.
