How important are page titles?

I am webmaster for a medium sized association. I am working with a Content Management System that does not allow unique page titles. The page title is pulled from the main headline on the page so often page titles are as informative as "Sponsorship", Chapters", etc.
I felt this was a problem and asked the CMS manager to allow for unique page titles. His answer was that you could put data in the Meta Description tag and was that enough? As far as SEO I wasn't sure. How important is the page title? Given that this site is a nonprofit and that the people who need the site seem to find it well enough. Is their an importance for the page titile, other than SEO reasons? Any reasons I can use to justify the cost in changing the system to allow for unique page titles?

Is that the title in the meta tags? or the meta title? If then yes its important. As you think, in searching your first option to click on the site you want is the title, it gives impression to the users where to go.

Meta title is the most important part of your website's search engine optimization. But as you can not use different meta title in different pages of your website, you need to make sure that you have used all the relevant keywords carefully in the meta description section because there is no other options available.

Title tags are the most important metatags. They are the first thing that SE bots read whenever they crawl a website. To rank, you should choose title tags that are relevant to page content. Relevancy is equally important.

A friend of mine recently asked me to explain him the basics of SEO. I told him: "In SEO, title is the most important thing in the world... after your girlfriend and family of course

". Now, I am not sure whether there is only one website based on the CMS you have... However, it is a huge advantage if your CMS is SEO Freindly. You might look at it as a future investment. If you do it now, you will be able to use it in future and it will become a great advantage over comatition.

Just think of how are you going to associate your pages? That is why page title is important. It gives an identification and classification of each pages for the users to be able to determine what are those and for SE to give you an accurate identification through keywords/page titles.
