There are three factors to consider when registering domain name.
1. Security
2. Management
3. Price
Ten Things to Consider When Registering a Domain Name
1. Is the company you are buying it from accredited by ICANN?
2. Is the website secure?
3. Are you required to login to your account?
4. What is the site’s privacy policy?
5. What contact information should you give?
6. Does the company offer “registrar lock”?
7. How good is the domain renewal service?
8. What if I choose not to renew a domain name?
9. Have you checked all the different fees?
10. How can you contact the company?

Can you shed some light on this.I have bought a domain and hosting from Hostgator .I didn't see this option.

your domain name should be closely related your business or it can be any keyword, that will help you in term of SEO.

This is really a good list to consider and a point i would like to use is the support whether it provides you good services , just look at support cell also.
