At the time of purchasing a hosting as first you have to choose the platform of the hosting like Windows and Linux. Generally Linux Hosting is far cheaper then Windows. but this is completely dependent on your website development if your site is built using ASP then you have to choose windows server and using PHP then you have to choose Linux server. Many windows server supports Linux also for this you have to read their manual or package includes.

We went for Linux with our hosting, it seemed to offer .htaccess which we find useful on our site when using PHP etc, but at the end of the day it's probably down to personal preference and what your site needs to run.

linux if you want to set up an ecommerce store using oscommerce or similar. from my experience, slightly easier than windows, although not much of a difference really.

I've had less problem with Linux, but it has also been over 4 yrs since I've been on a server running Windows.

At the begging I used windows, then I transfer to Linux Hosting because my site was small and I need something cheaper

After a period of 20 months I found out that my website is so slow and that problem out of the sever because it's loaded by more than 50-60 website, time mean I'm planning to transfer bake to windows Hosting

If you need windows technologies like the amazing ASP.net or ms sql server you will certainly need windows, but if you are just gonna use php/perl and mysql you dont need windows hosting
