analogy
I always use a real estate analogy for domains. .com is like living in the city, the other domains are like living in the sticks. Sure there will always be someone who wants to live 100 miles from town out in the .net or .org countryside, but they wont be bothered by any traffic or business taking place out there.
The only potential i see for future extensions to be successful would be the .asia which has recently been released as an asian portal and the continually passed over .SPAM which could really help in cleaning up traffic and directing it to a more easily moderated part of town.
